After we heard the surprise news this morning of five arrested in connection with Damien Nettles disappearance from the Island fourteen years ago, we spoke to Valerie Nettles, Damien’s Mum.

Damien Nettles(You can have a listen to the full conversation below.)

“The police have kept me in the loop that this was going to happen. I’m just going to wait and see what comes of it. After all of these years I find it hard to be too hopeful,” she told VentnorBlog.

“There is no handbook”
We commented about the tireless efforts of Valerie and the rest of the Nettles’ family on keeping Damien’s disappearance in the public concious, even after 14 years – “There is no handbook when you are a parent, or family member of a missing person. There are no guidelines,” Valerie responded, “You either give up – and don’t know what to do, and so you do nothing – or you get mad – and I got mad.

“I got mad at the lack of things that were being done initially. That spurred me on to do something to keep up the profile, for Damien, because I’ve always felt that something bad might have happened to him. I’ve never been able to put a finger on it – and I still can’t until we’re done and dusted with what’s going on right now. I just have to wait and see.”

“Someone just tell me where he is”
“The bottom line is all that I want is my Son’s body. That’s all I want. I just want to know where he is. I just want to know what’s been done with him.

“It common decency for God’s sake – someone just tell me where he is.”
