Report Reveals Poor Results For IW NHS PCT

St Mary’s Hospital fares badly in an independent report published yesterday.

Hospital Report Reveals Poor Results For IW NHS The Dr Foster Hospital Guide, which is now in its tenth year, provides an independent view on the performance of the NHS.

It was unfortunate to read that the Island’s PCT is unfavourably mentioned twice in the report.

8th higher than expected mortality ratio
In the report for 2009/10, we’re told that St Mary’s has one of the highest (8th) Hospital Standardised Mortality Ratios (HMSR). What this means in layman’s terms is higher than expected mortality. St Mary’s Hospital’s ratio was 115.

At the other end of the spectrum, The Royal Free Hampstead NHS Trust and the University College London Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust both scored the lowest ratios at just 72.

Medical director Mark Price told the CP earlier today, “It will take time for the results of improved data collection to be reflected in the national analysis of our data but we already know, using another internationally recognised mortality index, we are 97 against an average of 100.”

Performance for stroke treatment
The bad news didn’t stop there though. The report revealed that St Mary’s was also one of the worst performers for urgent treatment in relation to those suffering with Stroke.

We’ve written to Andrew Turner for a comment on the bad performance and will update the story once we hear back.

Let’s hope that next year the IW PCT is one of those celebrated in the report
