    Story

In 2013 regulations passed by Michael Gove, then Education Secretary, removed the discretion Head Teachers had to authorise up to 10 days absence in term time.

This policy change was not supported by the evidence and it wasn't and isn't supported by teachers and parents. It has culminated in the criminalisation of tens of thousands of parents. Over 300,000 parents have now received Penalty Notices and the vast majority of them were NOT in relation to truancy.

Following the decision in IW Council -v- Platt at the Supreme Court, to 'regularly attend school' now means to 'attend in accordance with the rules prescribed by the school'. That means that ANY parent CAN be criminally prosecuted if a child is even one minute late to school. Of course we don't expect to see cases of '1 minute late' prosecutions but we are already seeing cases where prosecutions are being brought because a school did not believe a parent who claimed a child was ill. When illness is recorded as UNAUTHORISED it opens the door to prosecution. That can't be right, fair or proportionate.

The events at the Supreme Court in April 2017 have made it essential that Parents stand together and have their voices heard and the Parents Union is an organisation that can ensure our voices are heard at the highest levels of government.

That costs money. I want to try and help fund raise £10,000 so that The Parents Union, which has been run on a completely voluntary basis by a small team of people, can be properly funded and have at least 2 full time members of staff. They need money for travel, to attend party conferences and to print and distribute materials to MPs, Head Teachers and to support parents.

If even 500 parents were to donate £20 it would fund the Union for 4 months. There is NO APPEALS process for Penalty Notices. If you don't pay one, you get summonsed to court.

Thanks you for taking the time to read this and thank you for your kind support.
