Story

Thanks for taking the time to visit our JustGiving page.

Cancer is one of those diseases that not only has everyone heard of but everyone knows of someone who has had the disease themselves. When people hear the word they still automatically think the worst, yet cancer treatments improve all the time. Having said that, it's still a long, hard, painful road to recovery for those people who survive the condition.

It's often easy to recognise those with it, the usually gaunt frame, pale skin, general lethargy and lack of hair are sometimes indicators. People are well meaning and sympathise with people they meet with the disease but, in my experience, those suffering from it would much prefer it if they could do so privately. If strangers didn't look at them with pity and feel uncomfortable around them it would be easier to bear.

Appearance means a lot to most people and many take great pride in their hair. Being deprived of it is often a huge blow to that person's confidence and that is addition to feeling like death warmed up.

At this festive time of year, when most people are happy and looking forward to Christmas with their loved ones I spare a thought for those struggling with cancer. The Little Princess Trust is an organisation which makes wigs from donated hair and gives them to children suffering from cancer.

Most people who try to raise awareness and money for the cause do so by shaving their heads completely and while that is very admirable it's too drastic for most and is not necessary. To help make a wig the trust only requires a minimum of 7 inches of good hair.

Long hair is fashionable at the moment but fashion changes quickly, so my plea is this: before going to the hairdressers for that Christmas party or New Year hair cut, please measure the locks first. Can you spare just 7 inches? If so, not only do you get a pretty new look, a little child out there gets one too and a big boost to their confidence.

Plus, while the trust is lucky enough to get generous hair donations, they don't always get much monetary help and it takes time, effort and money to make these wigs, if you can skip the extra mince pie or Christmas cake, send a little donation instead.  It costs £350 to turn our hair into a wig for a child, and so we are setting this as our initial target!

In 2015 I had 18 inches cut from my hair for The Little Princess Trust and this year I'm roping my soon to be husband, Greg Chapman in too. As he regularly performs his comedy shows at the Isle of Wight Steam Railway, we decided this was the perfect venue to try to get the word out about our haircuts!

The Railway have been kind enough to allow us to make this a public event, cutting our hair on stage at the end of one of the shows, in the hope that it will encourage others to do likewise or to at least donate a little something to the cause. This year between us we are planning to donate about another 20
Inches between us.
