A FORMER dinner lady who had sex with a schoolboy on her kitchen floor, has been jailed following an appeal by the Attorney General's office.

The Attorney General appealed against the original sentence imposed on Terri Spragg, 35, who was handed a 15 month suspended jail sentence in January.

The Court of Appeal today (Thursday) ruled Spragg, of Bettesworth Road, Ryde, would now be jailed for three years. She has been placed on the Sex Offenders' Register for five years.

Spragg was found guilty of seven charges of sexual activity with a child following a trial last year. She was cleared of two further charges.

Former dinner lady, Spragg, had sex with the schoolboy on the kitchen floor of her home and warned him not to tell anyone about it because it was not legal.

She had sex with the boy on several occasions, often after drinking sessions. She denied all the charges.

Trial judge John Price said he spared Spragg jail, as it would have meant her four children going into foster care.

* Solicitor General Robert Buckland QC MP referred the original sentence to the Court of Appeal as unduly lenient.

He said: "Gaining a child’s trust and abusing it in this way is unacceptable. The original sentence failed to take proper account of the seriousness of the offence and the impact it has had on the victim and his family.

"I hope the Court’s decision to impose an immediate prison sentence sends a clear message to society that such offences will not be tolerated."

Speaking after the original sentencing a spokesperson for the NSPCC said: "Spragg deliberately targeted, and took advantage of, an underage boy. Her deplorable actions have had a serious effect on the victim and we hope he receives swift support.

"Child abuse has devastating effects and can ruin lives. that’s why the NSPCC is visiting primary schools with its Speak Out, Stay Safe service, empowering children to protect themselves from abuse and to speak out if they have concerns.

"Since the service launched, the NSPCC has spoken to more than 2,600 primary school children, through 30 unique school visits across the whole of the Isle of Wight."
