Vectis Radio – the Island’s community radio station – has strengthened its management team ahead of its move to FM later this year.

Having been involved at Vectis from its beginning around six years ago, Kelvin Currie has been appointed a director.

Kelvin was one of the driving forces behind the station’s application for an FM licence, and has been leading the preparations since Ofcom granted the licence.

Weekend shows
Kelvin presents the Saturday mid-morning show and the Sunday retro-music show, and his love of music dates back to his life as a mobile DJ in the 1970s.

He now runs his own business, West Wight Audio, and still finds time to keep Vectis Radio technically up to date and equipped.

The station’s most important period
Station Director and founder Ian Mac said,

“I am absolutely delighted Kelvin is joining us as director, at probably the station’s most important period.

“We have been growing since 2010, and three years ago added the Vectis Radio 4Ps training school, which gives youngsters an opportunity to build confidence and communication skills, and in some cases, the chance to fulfil a dream.

“Kelvin has been playing a major part since day one.”

Honoured to be board member
Kelvin said:

“I am grateful for this opportunity to help Vectis Radio move forward in its push to broadcast on FM. The station gave me the opportunity to broadcast, something I never thought I would do, and it has gone on to help many people gain confidence and self esteem by using radio as therapy.

“The addition of FM will enhance Vectis Radio as a full community radio station, enhance the experience that our students have, and also enhance how we serve the local community. I am honoured to be asked to join the board.”

FM radio licence
Ofcom last year awarded Vectis Radio an FM licence to broadcast throughout Newport.

It is a not-for-profit licence that will focus on providing quality local radio, as well as on young talent.
