Lifeguard cover on an Isle of Wight beach is to be introduced for the first time, the RNLI has said.

The new service is being started at one resort, Sandown, with two lifeguards working from a station on the beach.

The charity said it was the first time a beach on the island had been patrolled by its lifeguards.

The popular tourist and surfer beach on the east coast of the island will be manned from Saturday between 10:00 - 18:00 BST until 6 September.

Ed Stevens, RNLI Lifeguard Manager, said: "Building on the expertise we have developed through 14 years of providing beach patrols elsewhere on the UK's coast, we hope to become a welcome addition to the Sandown community."
