Villagers are appealing for “Bags of Help” from shoppers to get their footpath project off the ground.

The Ashknowle Lane scheme, which aims to create a safe, all-weather route between Niton and Whitwell, has been shortlisted in a Tesco scheme which benefits community ventures from the proceeds of the government’s 5p carrier bag levy.

Your vote needed
Niton and Whitwell Parish Council – whose “NitWhit” community bus project attracted Island-wide attention earlier this winter – wants Tesco customers to turn out to vote in-store in the coming week, in the hope of topping the “Bags of Help” poll of three local shortlisted projects.

Up for grabs are awards of £12,000, £10,000 and £8,000.

What is the Ashknowle Lane project?
Ashknowle Lane, a muddy bridleway, runs parallel to the main Niton-Whitwell road, which has no pavement and a 60mph speed limit.

Parish councillor Jon Boileau Goad said:

“You take your life in your hands trying to walk on that racetrack of a road.”

Fast road

The plan is to lay a compacted surface suitable for walkers, cyclists and children attending Niton Primary School.

The poll, in all four of Tesco’s Island stores, runs from Saturday (27/2) until Sunday March 6th. The other shortlisted projects are The Hop Yard at Ventnor Botanic Gardens, and Community Action IOW – Riverside Garden in Newport.
