Overnight rain expected to cause further flooding later today

The Environment Agency has issued a flood alert for the Eastern Yar after 20mm of rain fell in the area overnight (Wednesday/Thursday).

They say,

“Flooding is possible for the Eastern Yar and tributaries from Whitwell to Bembridge. Low lying land and roads will be affected first.

“Be prepared.

“In the last eight hours approximately 20mm of rain has fallen on an already saturated catchment. This will give rise to out of bank and road flooding through the Eastern Yar valley. Impacts will be seen in the upper reaches where access tracks at Horringford and Golf Links Road could be flooded.

“At Alverstone the river level is not expected to peak until later this afternoon and will probably rise high enough to back up at the main road bridge. There is a possibility the Flood Warning will need to be issued later, so any property level protection should be put in place now as a precaution.

“In Sandown, impacts are expected later today when caravan parks may experience flooding to land.

“The rain is expected to clear by 08:00 this morning with little additional rain forecast today.”
