broken window at Wendy's after nye

Here’s the official word on yobs behind vicious NYE attack

Three broken windows to shops in Ventnor were the least of the town’s problems this weekend, after yobs rampaged through the town and ended up viciously assaulting a man who tried to stop them stealing from a shop.

Police have confirmed today (Monday) they are investigating a report of a burglary and an assault in Ventnor on New Year’s Day.

Shop windows smashed
It’s understood the trouble started when yobs made their way through town in the early hours of New Year’s Day. They first made an attempt to smash the glass door to the former HSBC Bank (it will still open as planned today as the Ventnor Town Council’s new drop-in centre).

Yobs next smashed large glass windows in Wendy’s (pictured) and finally worked their way to the Premier Stores further along the High Street.

Serious head injuries
Police confirm the shop was burgled at about 2.15am at which time a 37-year-old man was also seriously assaulted. They are treating the incidents as being linked.

The victim, who had been trying to stop the yobs stealing from the shop, sustained a fractured skull, fractured eye socket and a broken nose and was taken to St Mary’s Hospital, Newport.

Three arrested
Police confirm three arrests following the incident.

A 17-year-old boy from Ventnor, an 18-year-old man from Ventnor and a 20-year-old man from Sandown have been arrested on suspicion of burglary other than dwelling – theft and section 18 grievous bodily harm with intent.
