Shelterbox in the Philippines

Isle of Wight Scouts collecting for Philippines disaster

Thanks to Malcolm for this latest update from Isle of Wight Scouting. Ed

On Saturday 30th November East Wight District Scouts will be working to raise funds to send Shelterboxes to the Philippines following the disaster.

Isle of Wight Scouts will be opening our Scout Shop, near Thorntons in High Street, Ryde, between 10am and 3pm and using it as a base for street collections.

Funds donated to Shelterbox pay for boxes containing emergency shelter and lifesaving supplies for families around the world who are affected by disasters, at a time when they need it most.

The Shelterbox charity
The Shelterbox charity was started in Cornwall as a small venture in association with the Rotary Club about 12 years ago. Since then Shelterbox have responded to over 200 natural or manmade disasters in 90 countries providing aid to over 1,000,000 people.

The content of each big green Shelterbox is tailored to a disaster but typically contains a disaster relief tent for an extended family, blankets, groundsheets, water storage and filtration equipment, cooking utensils, a basic tool kit, a children’s’ activity pack and other vital items to help a family survive in the aftermath of a disaster.

Support from Scouting organisation
The Worldwide Scouting organisation provide International support to Shelterbox, with teams of Scouts going to many of the disaster areas to assemble whole townships of temporary accommodation from the boxes.

Shelterbox assemble their boxes and store them in warehouses around the world, allowing them to be distributed quickly to disaster areas. The disaster in the Philippines has stripped all local stocks and Shelterbox urgently need funds to complete their relief mission.

Update from County Commissioner
Some of you will know that County Commissioner Anthony Roberts has been out to the Philippines, helping in his role with the Red Cross.

He returned this week, reporting that in the area in which he was assigned to operate, there were few fatalities and the injuries he dealt with were mainly broken bones.
