Brading High Street closes for two weeks for water mains repairs

This in from Southern Water in their own words. Ed

Southern Water is beginning the final phase of a programme to replace the ageing Victorian water main that runs between Brading and St Helens on the Isle of Wight.

The old cast iron pipe has served us well but is starting to show its age. It has suffered a number of bursts and leaks in recent years, sometimes leading to interruptions to tap water supply and emergency road closures while we make repairs.

Plan of works
From 6 May, construction moved to:

  • High Street, Brading, heading north from the junction with Quay Lane. A 30-metre section of High Street will be closed to through-traffic while we complete this phase, and a diversion route following the B3330 and B3395 will be clearly signed. We anticipate this section will take two weeks to complete.
  • We will then move to the section between High Street and St Mary’s Road, via St Mary’s Court. Access for residents and businesses will be maintained throughout this section of the work and we expect this phase to take four weeks to complete.
  • We will then begin the final section on Quay Lane, installing approximately 700m of new pipe heading eastwards from the junction with High Street, Brading. We anticipate this final section will be complete by the end of July. Access for residents and businesses on Quay Lane will be maintained throughout this phase of work.

Project Manager Peter Simmons said:

“I’d like to thank customers for their continued patience while we carry out this essential scheme. We’ll be in the area for a few weeks but the benefits – a more reliable supply of water to customers’ taps – will be long term.”

The work will be carried out by contractor Clancy Docwra which is liaising with residents living nearby.
