A COUNCILLOR is ashamed of Bromley Council for rejecting pleas to carry out a traffic survey on Downham Estate.

Councillors Jamie Gillespie along and Steve Gosling represent the Plaistow and Sundrige ward. They presented a 300-signature petition to Bromley's environmental services sub-committee asking it to look into traffic calming measures for the Southover, Rangefield Road and Avondale Road areas.

The estate is split between Bromley and Lewisham boroughs and resident appealed to Bromley Council after they became concerned about speeding motorists.

But at the meeting, borough officers recommended no action be taken because the area is not a priority.

After the meeting, Cllr Gillespie said: "I feel ashamed tonight. When we put together the petition, local residents came up with really sensible suggestions and now the council is not listening."

Liberal Democrat Cllr Gosling added: "I suspected Conservative cuts to the environmental services budget were hurting and this is evidence."

A council spokesman said: "We are committed to road safety in Bromley and we have never cut a road safety project through lack of funds.

"There are not that many accidents which happen in the Bromley side of the estate."

Lewisham Council introduced road calming measures, such as speed bumps, on its half of the estate last year.
