Sandown residents evacuated due to suspected gas leak (updated)

Fitzroy St:

Thanks to OnTheWight reader ‘Isle of Wight Bob’ for sharing news that residents in Fitzroy Street have been evacuated from their properties after a car collided with a property in Leed Street.

It’s thought that the collision has caused a gas leak and police are asking residents to avoid Avoid Leed Street, Sandown Street and Fitzroy Street until the situation is resolved.

Police can confirm they attended the scene of a car accident in Leed Street, Sandown this morning.

The incident was occurred at 11.09am and involved a female driver who suffered slight head injuries after her car hit the wall of a property in Leed Street, Sandown.

Due to a suspected gas leak IOW Fire and Rescue attended the scene and the area was cordoned off.

The fire service has advised that the situation is under control and safe and the cordon is about to be removed.

Evacuees were advised to take refuge in the Castle Pub.
