HARBOUR bosses have relaxed the rules governing the operation of Wightlink’s new cross-Solent ferries in a move that will result in extra sailings.

The controversial W-class vessels operating on the Lymington to Yarmouth route will be permitted to sail in rougher weather than the current regulations allow.

The new ferries are larger than their predecessors and are equipped with powerful thrusters.

When they were introduced three years ago the 1,496-tonne vessels were banned from operating in winds stronger than 35 knots gusting 42 knots.

Now the limit has been increased to 40 knots gusting 47 knots, reducing the number of crossings that will have to be cancelled because of bad weather.

The decision was taken at a meeting of Lymington Harbour Commissioners and is likely to result in an extra 30 sailings a year.

Commissioners sought the views of Natural England and were advised that the changes would have no significant impact on wildlife habitats in the estuary.
