John Luckett, the care worker who challenged IW Councillors to experience a day working as a Care worker has announced his intention to stand as an Island Independent candidate in the Newport North Ward which includes Whippingham South.

John LuckettHe will join a strong team of Island Independent candidates with representation in nearly every Ward on the Island.

“Through my campaigning experience I have observed and learnt many things about how our Island is run. The biggest lessons being that playing party politics at a local level prevents balanced decision making, and that ANY ruling group who uses block voting presents an even bigger problem, being detrimental to public interest and local democracy. Each issue should be voted on its merit and Councillors allowed free votes according to wishes of their electorate and their own consciences.”

I am improving the voter’s choice
He went on to say, “My response to those who may think I am splitting the vote I say – Absolutely not – I believe I am improving voter’s choice – almost two thirds of people in this Ward chose not to vote last time – and I can truly identify with all these people. I sincerely hope I can appeal to this majority who remain sceptical, disillusioned and let down by the Political Parties and give them a voice in Island affairs – that has to be good for Islanders in all walks of life.

“I am looking forwards to meeting more people in the Ward and I am also lucky enough in my job as a health professional that I learn of people’s concerns and issues almost on a daily basis. People can rest assured that if elected I won’t forget I remain accountable to the electorate and am not directed by Party policy decided in Westminster.”
