Isle of Wight locomotive visits Swanage Railway

A Victorian locomotive from the Isle of Wight is to operate on the mainland for the first time in 88 years.

The No. W24 'Calbourne' from the Isle of Wight Railway has been brought to Dorset to join the No. 53 locomotive on the Swanage Railway.

Both are the last working examples of their kind.

The locomotives will be put to work pulling passenger and freight trains throughout a three-day steam event, ending on Sunday.

Swanage Railway commercial manager Martin Payne said: "This will be a very special and exciting event and we're very grateful to the Isle of Wight Railway for allowing its delightful locomotive to cross the Solent and spend three days working in Dorset."

Built in 1891 and shipped to the Isle of Wight in 1925, London and South Western Railway 02 No. 209 was allocated the Island number W24 and renamed after a village on the island.
